q & a
How does it work?
The Obagi Blue Peel is the treatment of choice for many. In this procedure, a low concentration of the peeling agent TCA (Trichloroacetic Acid) is mixed with a special base prior to its application. Dr. Brozowski customizes this peel to your skin type by adjusting the acid concentration and the number of coats used. Application of the peeling solution on the skin initiates the peeling process and causes the topmost (dead layer of the skin) to slowly peel off. In a few weeks a healthier skin replaces the old skin.
What are the safety concerns and possible side effects?
Long-term complications resulting form the Blue Peel are rare. Due to the superficial nature of the peel, complications that can occur from deeper peels, laser resurfacing or dermabrasion are unlikely. Temporary, mild pigmentation and redness may occur, but can usually be corrected by following the post-peel instructions and working with your physician.
What is the level of discomfort during and after the treatment?
You may experience some discomfort, similar to a transient stinging sensation, during the treatment. You can reduce any discomfort by taking a mild pain-killer, such as Tylenol or Advil, prior to your procedure.
How long is the recovery time?
Immediately after the procedure, a bluish tint remains on your skin, which can last for 1-4 days. Some swelling may occur, usually around the eye area. Swelling varies according to the depth of the peel and the degree of skin laxity. It should not make you too uncomfortable. Skin will feel tight and darken before it starts to peel. Skin will begin to peel in 2-3 days. You should avoid any sun exposure for 2 weeks.
How long will it take to see the full benefits?
When your skin is finished peeling, you will notice an immediate improvement. Over the next 6 weeks, your skin will become more vibrant, smooth and rejuvenated.
Can dark-skinned individuals have a Blue Peel?
Yes. The slow-acting base and lower concentration of TCA combine to enable patients of all skin colors and thickness achieve healthy, smooth skin.
